My late father, served in the Navy from 1943-1946 during WW2. I am very proud of my father’s Naval service. It was a unique period in American history for him as well. He lived through integration in the Navy as well as segregation in the Navy. And he came through honorably too. Nevertheless, it was not all smooth sailing he once told me. My son is in the Navy too.

Thank you Mr. Joyner for your service!

Peter Parsons talks about “fantasies”, etc. and how Sakakida’s stories have been “demolished by guerrillas and by MacArthur sources”, YET he sites absolutely NO guerrillas OR MacArthur sources that “demolish” what Sakakida has written. What are those “sources”? From my research, ALL of them are based on hearsay on hearsay on hearsay! Those are NOT accurate, historical sources. How does one “easily look it up” as Parsons has suggested. He has not cited any of these sources. Sakakida’s book may not be accurate, but I have seen no proof that it is not.

My father in law, TWE “Luke” Bowdler, spoke very highly of Hank, not only as an officer, but as a friend. He was on the first 3 war patrols of the Crevalle as well as the Rasher’s 5th. They all deserve our respect and admiration.

YOUR FATHER WAS ONE OF MANY OF OUR BLESSED AND VERY SMART PEOPLE THA T STRUGGLED, BUT REFUSED TO LET ANYONE OR ANY EVENT CHANGE HIM OR MAKE HIM LOSE FOCUS ON WHAT HE WANT TO BECOME. HE USED THE NEGETIVE

Chap, all of a sudden, this post became a bit painful.
I hear that the clearing at the end of the path is a wonderful place.
Hoping there is room for a lot of handflying up there, and that not too many aviators are in the same corner of any one area.

Please look closely at the pictures published on the sinking of the Count! The hull number is not 974. This was another Spruance class that was sunk. I served as well on the USS Comte De Grasse DD974 from 1980-1985 with lots of fond memories.

Chap—I was watching a clip of Rick Perry on Wolf Blitzer tonight. The fellas at Hot Air were poking fun at the fact he called Hot Air “Hot Gas”. ;) But what fought my attention was what he said about Newt Gingrich being on top: “It’s his turn in the barrel.” I ’bout busted a gut, and had to Google it to prove to my wife the origin of the phrase. And whatcha know—Chapomatic was fourth on Google for “Your turn in the barrel” ;) Well done sir!

The story of Richard Sakakida is one that needed no embellishment. That makes me wonder WHY he began several years after the war to do just that, making up absolute fantasies about how he helped the guerrillas escape from a jail and how he sent messages to MacArthur. Both of these stories have been totally demolished by guerrillas and by the MacArthur sources. His life story for those three years in Japanese-occupied Manila is totally bogus. And not worthy of the man. Sorry folks, but you can easily look it up–I wonder why no one has! Even in his original CIC interviews in Sept and Oct of 1945 he absolutely denied sending messages to GHQ and helping in the guerrilla raid on the prison. Why the changes in story later?
