Elite Schools And Elitism
Malcolm Gladwell’s New Yorker article on Harvard admissions (via Enrevanche) has been passed all around the office this week. I must admit that I chose not to apply to Harvard for my master’s back in the day, not because I wouldn’t be admitted (which is of course possible), but because I saw that the primary thing they wanted to sell to me for the one year program was “diversity”, and apparently not the kind of diversity I was. So I got a good education instead.
But apparently there are downsides for such a decision.
I’ll quote P.J. O’Rourke here, speaking about nominating cabinet members: “Maybe we need fewer guys from the Ivy League in there and a few more from Ohio State.”

I’ll engage in a little cronyism here and nominate my dad who has a masters from Ohio State and Harvard and is a life-long Republican. And the coolest socialist I know in terms of how he actually manages his business.

Sounds like one of those “independent thinkers” that I’ve heard are so very dangerous ;)

Very much so. And he raised three more independent thinkers, including a son who immersed himself in all things marx, who has an annoying tendency to point out to his father how the family business could be more profitable. Needless to say, the dinner table wasn’t and still isn’t boring.
