Reason #439 Why I Hate Power Point
Here you go. Good design is good thinking. How do you like design of the first graphic?
I may have an eighth dan Power Point black belt, but I know when Power Point should not be used for thinking.

There was a time, in the not too distant past, when one brainstormed on a simple legal pad with pencil, followed by putting cogent thought to pen and paper, or even, yes, MS Word. Not today — throw some half-baked ideas into PPT and make sure to dress it up with pretty graphics and that oft times conceal rather than illuminate. Oh, and make sure it is a minimum of 50+ slides in length and exceeds 50Mb. PPT is the boil on reasoned thought’s butt that seriously needs to be lanced…

(who is feeling particularly grouchy after wading through several in-box busters like the above today, all pointless drivel…)

This seems as good a time as any to point to Edward Tufte’s jeremaiad against PowerPoint.
Guy Kawasaki has a very useful rule of thumb for PPTs as well:
“[A] PowerPoint presentation should have ten slides, last no more than twenty minutes, and contain no font smaller than thirty points.”
The 10/20/30 rule… live it, learn it, love it.
