I had no idea that this was the author of Explaining Hitler until I saw the blurb on the sidebar. That was a powerful book.

We certainly should be, to use Ron Rosenbaum’s words, “haunted by Cambodia” and consider the role the Vietnam War played in the ensuing genocide — it seems to have all been too neatly forgotten. My seniors in the philosophy class had never heard of it, so we did talk about it and I popped in Spalding Gray’s Swimming to Cambodia to provide a gentle introduction — a few went out to rent The Killing Fields as a result and want to learn more.

Does anyone happen to know of the links to the Soviet archives of Soviet involvement in Vietnam? I’ve seen that mentioned before and I would love to read it for myself and pass it on to students.

The Killing Fields was a powerful movie–and Dr. Ngor a man who retained dignity in an undignified world. (I remember also that the Oldfield soundtrack was unusual at the time.)

I’ve not dug into that history much, but know that for a short time the Soviet archives had some interesting info–but would also note the Chinese archives have never been opened…
