Good Bad Timing

Hot on the heels of Daily Pundit’s essay about men volunteering

Perhaps men are merely acting rationally. They’ve assessed the risk of volunteering to work with children, and want no part of it. If so, that’s why BB-BS [Big Brothers-Big Sisters] rates of male participation are well below national averages, which include volunteering that doesn’t involve children.

comes a story that underlines what DP’s talking about, in emotional content and life risk if not exactly the same situation.

A 48-year-old Narragansett man has been charged with raping someone 32 years ago when both he and the alleged victim were 16 years old, the attorney general’s office said this week.

Stone [defense lawyer] said Allen [the defendant, who has his name and home address in the paper] is now married, has two children who are high school age or older, and has never faced any criminal charges before — not even a traffic offense. “He was shocked,” Stone said. “He says they never had intercourse — willing, unwilling or otherwise.”

I would hope that the judge would have the sense and the decency to dismiss unless some physical evidence is presented. The defendant must be wondering if Joseph K. was a fictional character — makes my stomach turn.

A good buddy of mine graduated from UNC in education but his student teaching experience resulted in a lifetime vow not to return to his calling — he was treated as a total freak the whole time — that the McMartin case was ascendant at the time didn’t help.

A male student I’ve taught/mentored the past two years had a wonderful experience this past spring as in intern in a first grade classroom and his supportive supervising teacher and I have convinced him to become a first grade teacher.

I wonder when I’ll see that happen again.

As a never married male heterosexual I’m scared to death of volunteering or anything to do with other people’s children unless the adults are good friends.

Too many psychos out there projecting their insecurities to make it worth it for me.

I see Unpartisan categorizes Chapomatic as being “left.”

    My apologies….

Fits as well as any other label, I suppose. Perhaps my essay on how Titan contractors and NGO workers in Diyala are the new Abraham Lincoln Brigades is what did it.
