Treason Is Patriotism…Again
I’m not going to add a whole lot of excerpts; Internet is pretty tight here. But most of these are essential reads if you remember where my head was at on this blog circa 2005. Bottom line: A Rolling Stone reporter embeds with the Taliban, uses his passport to pass with his buddies through a checkpoint, and praises his new buddies while he damns us. Worked at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, too, like another reporter I’ve tangled with on this site.
Blackfive is pretty mad. So is Armed Liberal. As well as Dave Dilegge and Bing West. I’m not too happy either.
But what’s going to happen to that guy? Anything? If it’s anything like the last couple of guys, likely not. Anyone willing to enforce any ethical standards on American journalists on a battlefield? Anyone?

Anything that ought to be done, and anybody who would do that, is not not going to be talked about, or talk about that, on the public internet.
M’self, I’m just an old poor wussy ineffectual kind of guy, who was bullied when young, but in this case I could imagine (IMAGINE, ONLY) a nice blanket party or something like that for this guy. I mean, there’s obviously a genetic reason for bullies, or they wouldn’t exist. We just have to point them in the right direction.

A lot of folks were upset with his use of his passport. A lot of folks were upset with the fact that such a pacifist was relieved that his safety was insured by the lives of a couple of Afghan families under threat of death. Abu Mukawama thought it was great… ’cause he likes to reach about insurgents from the inside. I just thought it was crappy journalism; probably the inspiration for the Meo piece. “Look how dangerous it was for me… am I not a good little journalist?”
He didn’t provide one real lick of information that anyone would fine useful or informative. He hung out and texted panicky messagess aoubt how his life was in danger. Great journalistic masterpiece.
I also find it strange that he intended to go along with them while they tried to kill coalition troops. Nice. So it’s not okay to kill Taliban, but it’s okay to romanticize their killing of others. I wrote about it, too. Rosen is a piece of work, but he’s getting paid for it. Rolling Stone is going to get their scoop and influence the opinions of young folks to think that they’ve been clued in to some amazing secrets about the Taliban, but they haven’t. It was a farce.

The thing that gets me is that it’s been done. A couple of years ago we had a BBC dude embed in a half hour TV special also focusing on “look at how brave I the reporter am” and advertising for the guys we’re fighting in a war…
