Thanks for the link, and for linking Long Tail and Sturgeon’s Law!
I think in some cases (though perhaps not online music, the Long Tail exists, but is not fat (which one researcher says that many people wish it was). But the Long Tail shouldn’t be confused be confused with the Even Longer Hair off the End of the Tail, which should be ignored.

Interestingly, the “Long Tail” theory of online retailing has worked out beautifully for me, as I now have access to online ordering for, and in many cases digital versions of, books and music that are decidedly not destined for mainstream success. I wonder if the study considered sites like eMusic, which has a huge catalog of otherwise hard-to-find indie, jazz and world music (for instance.)

Funnily enough, I might also be considered a purchaser of music that isn’t in the fat part of the tail. You are likely right that they screwed up by not looking at specialist retailers and out-of-the-way e-shops. Three places I buy records might skew the entire study if they had access to my purchasing history!
On the other hand there *is* a lot of dross out there. I wonder why I never saw Sturgeon’s Law and Long Tail put together before.
