Water Purification

Dusty, over at the Attic, has a link to a solar water purification technique used in developing areas. Neat idea, simple, useful.

I’ve seen a couple ideas like that, from solar furnaces to various off-the-grid power systems to windup radios (that led to portapower) . There seem to be many innovative items that aim to make someone’s life a little easier in a crappy place to live.

I have a chance in a few years to work on something interesting. But I’m less drawn towards introducing a new widget or technique than I am trying to figure out how to help someone live in a place that’s less crappy.

If these guys had a water system then maybe they wouldn’t need someone showing them how to kill germs by putting the water in PET bottles. That kind of less crappy.

If I were as smart as those kids here, or my friend who started this, I would have done it long ago. But I’m not, so I’ll have to wait and find an organization that needs skills I have.
